There is a white spot in my eyeball?

In the crease right between the sclera and the iris of my left eye, there is a white spot. I tried to brush it away, but come to find out it's actually either in or stuck on my eyeball. I can't feel it, which is why I suspect it's in my eye. Also, it looks like this white thing is pushing up against my iris. It's about the size of a a head of a pin, maybe larger. I don't know what this thing is. Can someone please help?

I think it's probably a "Pinguecula," ... which is pronounced 'Ping - GWEK"" - yoo - lar.' ... I'm afraid there's no common name for it, and it is a long difficult word, I'm sorry!

Pingueculae (the plural), pronounced ping - GWEK"" - yoo - lee, can be either on the inside (nose side) or the outside (ear side) of the eye, but the inside of the eye is much the more common.

I'm pretty sure from the very small size and the position, that that's what it is. Pingueculae are harmless.

If it were large and tri-angular, it just could be another thing called a 'Pterygium' ... which is pronounced 'Terrr -RIJJ"" - ee- um,' ... and like is shown here... http://www.icoph.org/med/medimages/B29.jpg

Pterygia (plural) are associated with lifes lived in bright sunlight and in very dry, hot countries, - - causing prolonged dry and dusty eyes. I very much doubt if it's this in your case.

The words 'pterygium' and ' pinguecula' are confusingly similar and also difficult, I'm sorry, - - but they are certainly different problems.

A pinguecula rarely (in my opinion) turns into a pterygium, and it usually gets no bigger.
