Should I buy one milk snake, or buy 2 as a pair?
I have been looking at bying a pueblan milk snake and have found several websites that seem to prefer to sell them in pairs. Is this better for the snakes? Do the snakes tend to take more to each other than to people? I am planing on having a 30 gallon tank, how much bigger of a setup would I need to buy as 2 reach adulthood as compared to one (which I am of the understanding would do fine in a 30 gallon).
ETA: Thanks for al the replies. I have been doing a ton of research lately and I knew that they could be canablistic, which is why I was so confused as to why the breeders were pushing pairs. I want to get a single pueblan milk snake, maybe the apricot version.
Is there a case for getting one gender over the other?
the reason that breeders sell in pairs is because it is easier for the breeder. its better for their bottom line. but in fairness a lot of people that buy snakes intend to breed them. it is not necessary to breed snakes though. they can live fine without ever being bred.
the only two snakes i keep together are 2 ball pythons and i'm not even sure why i do that because it is a risk to do so. i do have plans to change that as soon as we get the space. it's always a risk in housing two snakes together so if you decide to get a pair i would house them separately...they don't need very big tanks as babies. a 10 gallon should do fine for about a year. then after a year a 29 gallon would hold them for a while...especially if you get the snakes out a lot and handle them. the best size for a milk snake adult is a 40 gallon breeder tank i tend to perfer a bit on the larger size for my snakes (although you are right most sources on the internet say that a 29 gallon is fine for an adult).
good luck!!
