What's the best way to record good quality sound on acoustic Drum Kits?
I am making a home Recording Studio, for my band to record an album. I am going to be buying some Usb Recording equipment, so I can plug my instruments into one end via guitar and mic leads, and plug it into my PC.
But what do I do about drums? I am under the understanding that if I were to buy a digital kit, I could plug that into my equipment via the appropriate leads, but this is too expensive on top of all the other things I need to buy.
Will I be able to do it with microphones, and hook one up to each drum? Or is there another way? I am worried that if I do it with microphones, it will effect the quality, with background noise of the other instruments.
Help!
Your main problem is going to be how many tracks you can record at a time. Are you planning on Recording Live? Do you have a mixer with a lot of imputs? If you're going live you can run snare and kick mics into the mixer with all the other tracks and then run one mixer out to one of the USB imputs (assuming you can record two tracks at once.) Then place a good Condenser Mic in the room to get an live ambient room sound of the whole band and run that into the other recorder imput. Now record some of the song - play it back - and move levels and mic around to adjust the sound - it's going to take a lot of trial and error. On the play back you can mix the mixer track with the room track to get a decent mix.
If you get an expensive recording program and interface you can record everything (usually 8 tracks) separately. Usually 4 SM57's will work fine as Drum Mics.
